The Perth Voice newspaper, wrote the following article about Save Perth's Urban Wetland's last gathering at the wetland.

Thank you to The Perth Voice for highlighting this crucial issue, one that resonates deeply with many West Australians.

An online petition calling for the preservation of this wetland, or the creation of a new one as part of the Perth Cultural Centre 'rejuvenation,' has garnered over 2,600 signatures. A parliamentary petition with more than 600 signatures was also recently submitted to the WA Government.

Let’s be crystal clear: we are NOT opposed to the PCC redevelopment. We wholeheartedly support the vision for a greener, cooler, shadier cultural hub. But we firmly believe that this can, and should, include a wetland. A wetland—either the existing one or a new one—would enhance this space for everyone, especially children, whom Minister Templeman says will be “front and centre of attraction to the cultural precinct.”

For the past 12 years, this award-winning urban wetland has been an invaluable educational resource. Hundreds of children have learned about native species like frogs, fish, and reptiles through workshops led by ecologists and conservationists.

Traditional Custodian, Daniel Garlett, who guides children through the WA Museum to explore culture and the environment, then takes them straight to the wetland—a living, breathing example of the lessons they've just learned.

Children LOVE the wetland, and research shows that wild, green spaces have countless benefits, particularly for young people.

This doesn’t have to be an “either/or” choice.

We can have both: a vibrant cultural centre and a thriving wetland. Early designs for the redevelopment, based on community input, included a wetland.

That’s what we want to see—an integrated cultural centre that retains and celebrates this unique public space. Given how much this wetland is loved and nurtured by the community, we deserve the opportunity to discuss how to ensure Perth’s Cultural Centre reflects the best of what our city has to offer—one that includes a native wetland.

We sincerely look forward to someone from Government, responding to our requests to meet to further discuss this.

In the meantime, please get in touch if you'd like to know more.

Leave your details on our 'Join us' page and we'll be in touch.

ABOUT US >

We are a group of Perth locals who care deeply about wetlands as precious habitats for plants, animals and insects. They are also vital for human health.

We want this unique wetland green space retained or replaced with an equivalent or better wetland, as part of the Perth Cultural Centre Rejuvenation Project.

We know this is possible.

We believe we can have both!
